We have thoroughly enjoyed our research trip in Belize. But we have not finished yet. Even 6 months does not give us enough time to explore this tiny country with so much to offer.
The approach to living like a local has proved a good move, staying in one place for several months has given us the real perspective of day to day living in Belize. An experience we would not change for the world. We have had the pleasure of making many good friends and look forward to seeing them again in a few months.
Perhaps we will continue to live the nomadic lifestyle while in Belize. Life is too short and this little country has so much to offer, why limit ourselves?
We will take a vacation from our vacation and pause for family time, returning in early 2014 for more. There are too many things happening in our lives right now: daughter returning from her 2nd deployment, son just published his 1st book, weddings, things we don't want to miss. We will be leaving Belize shortly, driving back to the states.
While we're away, here are links to a couple of informative forums with current expats contributing (if you haven't found them already):

just have to ask.... from an everyday living perspective (ie factoring in shopping, ease of transportation, surroundings....), of the 2 places that you have lived, at this point, which would be your preference to live in?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous-Corozal has more to offer in comparison to Hopkins when it comes to shopping (more stores, close to MX). Public transportation is available in both places, but more frequent bus service in Corozal. Surroundings-Hopkins is more scenic--it's smaller and more of a village than a town. We like the remote-ness of Hopkins, you have to intentionally get there.
DeleteIts a good experience! very nice website and many useful links are here. I got too much information from here thanks buddy you just keep it up i really like it.

Cheryl-check out the earlier posts (from November)..in a nutshell drive daylight only, stay on the toll roads, be cooperative at the checkpoints, have fun! We have driven twice now (once down and once back) absolutely no issues whatsoever! I do have a route given to me by an expat--if you'd like a copy, send me your email address. -babs

ReplyDeleteHi Ben! We returned to the US in May 2013...but will be driving back to Belize in May of 2014. We have had only good experiences thru Mexico. The route we chose is mostly toll roads and in the center of the country. We also stop and smell the roses along the way!-babs

Dear Bob,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Joe Pinzone and I'm casting an international travel show about expats moving abroad. We'd love to film in the Caribbean/Central America and wanted to know if you could help us find expats who have moved there within the last 15 months or have been there for 3-4 years, but recently moved into a new home. The show documents their move to a new country and will place the country in fabulous light. The contributors on the show would also receive monetary compensation if they are filmed. If you'd like more information, please give me a call at 212-231-7716 or skype me at joefromnyc. You can also email me at joepinzone@leopardusa.com. Looking forward to hearing from you.
